CleanPowerSF Recognized as a Green Power Leader

CleanPowerSF Recognized as a Green Power Leader
  • Donald Pollitt

Green power programs have been a pivotal force in shaping a sustainable future by allowing residents and businesses to choose cleaner energy from their electric utility or Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program. Since the year 2000, the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) has recognized outstanding green power programs through its annual “Top 10” lists. The 2022 rankings continue to highlight utility green pricing programs but also mark a new milestone with the inclusion of rankings of CCA green power sales for the first time.

CleanPowerSF Shines

In the recently released NREL Annual Green Power List for 2022, CleanPowerSF has ranked 5th amongst its CCA peers in both CCA Green Power Sales and CCA Green Customers categories. This recognition for voluntary energy procurement goes above and beyond that state mandated level of RPS and highlights CleanPowerSF’s commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions for the community and also reflects the program’s continued popularity, with more than 380,000 customers enrolled and served by the program today.

NREL’s Recognition Criteria

Using information provided by energy service providers like utilities and community choice aggregators, NREL compiles its annual rankings of green pricing programs based on several key criteria, including total sales, the total number of customer participants, and the participation rate. These metrics offer a comprehensive view of the impact and reach of green power programs. CleanPowerSF’s fifth place ranking affirms its success in engaging a substantial number of customers and achieving noteworthy sales in the green power sector.

This is also the first year that NREL expanded its recognition to include CCA’s in their annual assessment. Recognizing the growing influence of CCA’s in the renewable energy landscape, NREL has not only invited but actively encouraged CCA’s to participate in the program. The decision to publish a separate “Top 10” CCA ranking underscores the importance of their role in advancing green power initiatives.

The Path to a Sustainable Future

CleanPowerSF’s rankings are not just a testament to its success but also a reflection of the broader movement towards a more sustainable future. CCA’s continue to transform the clean energy landscape in California, driving greenhouse gas emissions reductions and promoting greater decarbonization of energy uses. As we continue to navigate the challenges of climate change, programs like CleanPowerSF play a crucial role in leading our city and state towards a greener, more sustainable future.
